Kumano Kodo Trail -
"Japanese Camino"
The Kumano Kodo is an ancient network of pilgrimage trails on Japan’s Kii Peninsula, leading to the sacred Kumano Sanzan shrines (Hongu Taisha, Nachi Taisha, and Hayatama Taisha).
It has been walked for over a thousand years by emperors, monks, and commoners, and today it forms a UNESCO World Heritage‑listed cultural landscape under the designation “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
People call Kumano Kodo “the Japanese Camino” because it has been formally twinned with the Camino de Santiago as a sister pilgrimage, and both are UNESCO‑listed ancient walking routes.
Tourism boards and operators lean into that connection so Western walkers immediately understand it’s a multi‑day spiritual pilgrimage walk with stamps, credentials, and a completion certificate, much like the Camino.
