Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and one of the world’s oldest cities: known as Olispio by the Romans, settled by the Visigoths and the Arabs before becoming the base for the “Discoveries’ – Columbus, Magellan and Vasco de Gama all set sail from here. An earthquake in 1755 destroyed many buildings and dramatically brought an end to this powerful empire. The UNESCO-listed monastery in Belem still stands and is definitely worth a visit, as is the Alfama district for ‘fado’ (music) – or simply enjoy a stroll through the streets of this beautiful city. 

You will find the first waymark of your Portuguese Camino at the Cathedral.

Lisbon – Porto, 322km 

Luxury transport (private vehicle) from Lisbon into Porto for the start of the Camino.

Positioned along the picturesque banks of the Douro River, Porto is a city steeped in maritime history. Once you’ve settled into your hotel accommodations, seize the opportunity to venture into the city’s myriad cultural landmarks and indulge in sampling the renowned local wines. 

As evening sets in, our first Pilgrims dinner is arranged.

Your first full coastal cycling day begins as you leave Porto following Atlantic shoreline paths. Ride through seaside suburbs, beaches, and wooden boardwalks before reaching Vila do Conde, a charming town with maritime heritage and historic monasteries.

Continue north along Portugal’s scenic coastline, cycling through dunes, estuaries, and fishing villages. The route is mostly flat and relaxed, ideal for enjoying ocean views as you arrive in Esposende, located at the mouth of the Cávado River.

Today’s ride follows riverside paths and coastal tracks toward Viana do Castelo. The town’s grand squares, traditional architecture, and views from Monte de Santa Luzia provide a dramatic backdrop after a rewarding cycling day.

Cycle through tranquil countryside and along the Atlantic as you approach Caminha, a picturesque border town where the Minho River meets the sea. This scenic stage offers a blend of coastal beauty and rural charm.

Cross the Minho River into Spain and continue cycling along the Galician coast to A Guarda. Enjoy sweeping ocean views and your first taste of Galician culture and cuisine as the Camino continues northward.

Today’s ride follows coastal roads and clifftop views to Baiona, a lively seaside town known for its historic harbour and relaxed atmosphere. Take time to explore the waterfront and old town in the afternoon.

Cycle along scenic coastal routes and estuaries toward Vigo, Galicia’s largest city. This section blends ocean views with urban cycling, arriving in a vibrant port city full of energy, cafés, and maritime history.

Leaving the coast, today you turn inland and officially join the traditional Camino route. Ride through green hills, forest tracks, and rural villages before arriving in Redondela, where the coastal and central Camino routes merge.

Follow peaceful paths and riverside trails to Pontevedra, one of Galicia’s most beautiful old towns. Its car-free historic centre, stone churches, and lively plazas make it a favourite Camino stop.

Cycle through classic Galician countryside — vineyards, forests, and small hamlets — on your way to Padrón, a town rich in Camino legend and history. The sense of anticipation grows as Santiago draws closer.

Your final cycling stage leads into Santiago de Compostela, the spiritual heart of the Camino. Ride the last kilometres into the historic centre and arrive at the magnificent cathedral — a powerful and unforgettable finish to your coastal Camino cycling journey.
